How to Prevent Stress

By genelia at 2009-11-24 06:00:00
Stress related illnesses are on the rise. Life today is more hectic than it used to be, which is taking its toll on our collective health. Cardiac disease, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, and a host of issues related to stress and the immune system are endemic to our society. To avoid becoming yet another statistic of stress and anxiety symptoms, take heed of the following stress facts, because not knowing how to prevent stress can kill you.

Stress can provoke acne in a variety of ways. For example, as an individual experiences stress, the level of the body's stress hormone (cortisol) increases. This hormonal change causes an increase in oil production, which can lead to oily skin, acne and similar skin problems.

Stress may be the primary reason for unexplained hair loss. During stressful times, the hair can go into the telogen (fall-out) phase. In fact an event called "telogen effluvium" is a hair loss problem that can happen up to three months after a stressful situation. However, after this spontaneous loss, the hair typically grows back in six to nine months.

Biting one's nails is an ostentatious sign of nervousness. When you rub your fingers over the thumb nail, this can create a ridge across the nail. The rubbing action distorts the nail plate, and when the nail grows, a raised ridge forms in the middle of the nail.

Here are some tips for stress management:

Don't take on too much - remain realistic about what you can do. Don't be afraid to turn things down because you think you may miss out on a promotion.

Have some down time - allow yourself to switch off from everyday reality. Take on a hobby. Do some exercise. Play a game of squash. Go out for a meal and a movie. Have some fun, life is not always serious.

Get Yourself a “Stress Ball” – Now don’t laugh, but “stress balls” are a great way to work off tension in a positive way. What is a stress ball? I’m sure you’ve seen them – they are hand-sized balls, usually made of spongy foam, that you simply squeeze, and squeeze, and squeeze! They cost a couple of bucks and they’re a great tension buster (great for loosening up arthritic fingers too).

Herbs for Stress” and Other Healthy Supplements – Stress and anxiety have been proven to deplete the body’s stores of vital nutrients. Additionally, certain teas and herbs for stress have been shown to have a definite calming effect. If you are living a hectic lifestyle, you should definitely look into the possibility of supplementing your diet with quality supplements and herbs for stress relief.

“Drink Water” – Believe it or not, dehydration puts a lot of stress on your body and can make you feel cranky and foggy headed. Put down the soda, and stay away from the coffee (at least for some of the time) and drink a glass or two of cool, refreshing water while at work everyday. You’ll find that it perks you up and helps you to ward off the symptoms of workplace stress and anxiety.

Healthy nutrition can prevent stress in the following way. The body's ability to fight diseases or immunity will be strengthened and many people with weak systems will come down with diseases more easily than people who are strong in this sense. Also, good food with adequate nutritional value will feed your brain with the vital nutrients and your general health will be better.

Meditation is an effective stress prevention method which has been used by different people for different purposes. Many religions also preach meditation to their followers. Some people make use of meditation for self help while others use it to focus on their everyday life.

If you see a positive in every negative situation, you will have a hard time being stressed out. Whatever you tell your mind, it will carrying out that message. The more you can train your mind to stay positive in negative moments, the more positive you will become. This will help your body function a lot more smoother in pressure times.
