How to Deal with Autism

By genelia at 2010-01-07 02:58:10
Autism is a neurological condition characterized by impairments in social, communicative and behavioral development. It is three times as common, like ADHD, in boys. The level of severity varies and the problem of autism is international in scope. It has been described as a "public health concern.

Autism is referred to as a “spectrum disorder” because there is such a wide variation among people with the diagnosis. Researchers using technology that allows them to be able to see how our brains are structured also see that the brains of people with the label ‘Autism’ are vastly different from one another. However, all people with autism demonstrate impairments in the following three areas:
communication, social relationships and restricted patterns of behavior.

To help you understand some of the behaviors common to kids with autism review the following list:

Some kids with autism may have trouble talking and may make strange sounds, or they may not talk at all

Some kids with autism may flap their hands, spin, or laugh a lot

Some kids with autism will behave or play in unusual ways

They may be very active or be very quiet and like to spend time alone

It is generally accepted that autism is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Researchers are investigating a number of theories, including a possible link between heredity, genetics, and medical problems. Although there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities in many families, researchers have not yet identified a single "trigger" that causes autism to develop.

Parents of children with autism take on many roles in their child’s education. They must first recognize and pursue a diagnosis for their child. Once an accurate diagnosis is made, they must find a suitable program and services for their child. Parents need to also act as teachers in the home so that their children learn to generalize skills in the home that they are taught at school.

There are some treatments for autism:

Biomedical autism treatment is the practice of treating the underlying medical problems that can trigger autism and other disorders. Many people with an autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) have a very real medical condition that could include genetic susceptibilities, detoxification imbalance, immune dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, dietary sensitivities, biochemical abnormalities and others.

Speech therapy:People suffering with autism suffer from inability to speak or converse in a particular language. Some people use poor speech while the others are unable to apply grammar. Speech therapy helps people come over this inability.

The autism-affected children treated with nutritional supplements showed improved learning abilities, experience cognitive, academic and substantial behavioral gains. In most cases, the follow-up research showed positive feedback from parents of the autism-affected children after treatment with nutrient supplements of Vitamin-B6 and Vitamin-c, Magnesium, Niacin, and dimethylglycine.

Behavioral treatment programs typically include:

Concise instructions for the child
Coaching to perform certain behaviors or routines. Often times visual schedules are helpful.
Immediate rewards and praise for performed behaviors
A slow increase in the difficulty of behaviors.

Byonetics is a technology that addresses autism by using Cranial Dynamics. Cranial Dynamics repairs your child's developmental switches that are damaged and then connects them to the child's brain. Essentially, it "wakes up" the dead switches so your child is more alert and has better responses to certain stimuli.

Autism treatment can be varied in its approach and it is safe to say that many of the treatments can certainly deliver positive results. So, those who have an autistic child in the family can feel confident that problems associated with the condition can be overcome with the right approach to treatment.
