First of all there has to be a certain level of cholesterol in the body as it plays an vital role in the creation of tissue and cells. However, too much cholesterol can increase the risk of a stroke and associated coronary diseases.

Your first course of action is to have regular cholesterol tests to ensure you know what level of risk of heart disease your doctor will calculate from your test results. Understanding what the test entails and what the numbers refer to will help you to know what your cholesterol level is and what kind of changes to make in your lifestyle and the type of diet you should be adhering to, and what unhealthy habits, like a poor diet of fatty foods and smoking, should eliminate.

Stop smoking. Not only will this help keep your blood pressure in line, you'll also diminish your risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking is main risk factor for atherosclerosis.Smoking injures blood vessel walls and speeds up the process of hardening of the arteries. So even though it does not cause high blood pressure, smoking is bad for anyone, especially those with high blood pressure.

It becomes your job that you do something to transform your sedentary lifestyle. If you are on the heavy side, it's time to bring down any extra pounds. You should include in your daily diet nuts, oats, wholegrain food, and low fat butter and margarine products and of course, 8 or more glasses of water per day. You diet should be low in fat but high in vitamins and minerals.
