Common Cold and Flu Prevention

By genelia at 2010-01-09 00:37:35
While everyone may not know everything about a cold or the flu, everyone does know that they hate getting sick. Who doesn't hate putting their daily life on hold for an extremely annoying, down right obnoxious cold?

Common cold is generally transmitted when drops coming out when a person sneezes or coughs get airborne and then are inhaled by another person. Transmission by direct contact with a sick person is also frequent. The main symptoms of common cold are Runny nose, Sneezing, Tearing, Blocked nose, Sore throat, Cough and Headache.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness cause by the influenza virus. It can cause mild to sever illness, and in extreme cases it may even lead to death.

The average person has two or more colds per year. Children, typically have more. The cold is a leading reason for school absences and doctor visits. There are no effective prescription medications for treating the common cold. Antibiotics neither prevent nor kill viral infections.

Here are some of the accepted common cold facts. Colds are caused by viruses, not by being overheated or chilled. Being out in cold weather does not increase the likelihood that a person will “catch a cold”. Indoors is the place where most people probably become infected with a virus that leads to a cold.

Preventing the common cold and flu is a matter of practicing good health habits and maintaining a healthy immune system. What is often referred to as the common cold virus is actually a number of different viruses that can cause symptoms when they infect the lining of the nose. So, habits that protect the body from all forms of viruses and bacterial infections can help protect you from a common cold virus.

A scratchy throat or froggy voice is often the first sign a common cold or flu is infecting your child's systems. Many children also complain of dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. They may also grow more irritable or suffer from muscle aches.

How to prevent common cold and flu:

Carry a handkerchief or tissues with you, and try if possible to cover your mouth whenever you cough or sneeze. When you cough or sneeze and you don't cover your mouth, the germs that may be present will spread in the air. Many people use their hands to cover their mouths and consequently catch germs. That's why I recommend that you wash your hands regularly throughout the day.

Green Tea: Green tea contains antioxidants that can help to boost immune function, therefore with immune system strengthening substances green tea protects your body from getting cold or flu.

Chicken soup : No one knows how, but it works. It was nothing compared to the improvement after intake of chicken soup, our body might need to negate the effects of steam from hot water and hot chicken soup. If you look closer to any chicken soup recipe, you can see there are a lot of garlic, onions, peppers, etc which are natural remedies helping to improve immune system.

Squeezing the juice of one lemon into a glass of filtered or spring warm water first thing every morning. The same goes for a half teaspoon of baking soda.

Increase the intake of zinc in your diet. Some of the best dietary sources to obtain zinc include liver, eggs, red meat and oysters and it is widely believed that increasing your consumption of vitamin C can help reduce the symptoms when you have contracted a cold.

If you are armed with an array of the Young Living Essential Oils, and take other natural preventative measures to keep your immune system strong - then you have ownership of the best kept secret to fight colds and the flu.
