Bulimia Nervosa is best considered as three separate illnesses that share the essential features described above. They will be discussed below under three different headings; Simple, Anorexic, and Multi-impulsive Bulimia Nervosa.

In last few years, the ratio of people suffering from Bulimia Nervosa has increased proportionately. In fact, according to recent studies, it is even predicted that the number of people suffering from Bulimia eating disorder is two to three times as much as the number of people currently living with AIDS. Apart from this, it has also been found that Bulimia also affects different organs.

Bulimia signs include:

Binge eating (eating a lot at one time- this is often done in private, though, so you might not recognize it if it is happening to someone you know)

Going to the bathroom all the time after eating (to throw up)

Using diet pills or laxatives a lot

Exercising obsessively

A combination of the health problems discussed earlier

Consume excessive food in short period of time.

Excessive care if body weight and shape.

Tendency to purging (self induced vomiting) immediately after intake of food by taking enemas or by abusing laxatives.

Bulimia is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control (purging). The desire for food and candy is very strong and at the same time the person try to reduce weight. This causes a strong conflict between the desire to eat and the desire to reduce weight.

The fear of starvation drives the binge and the fear of gaining weight drives the purge. Self-loathing is at the root of it, because bulimics believe they have to be the perfect weight or no one will love them. Some even resort to measuring everything that goes in and comes out of their bodies, to make sure it's the same amount.

Bulimia causes depression, anxiety, and an extremely unhealthy relationship with food in general. The constant binging and purging is torturing to the body in many ways. The human body cannot process the amount of food being consumed, placing stress on the digestive system.

Bulimia is incredibly stressful on the body. Sufferers may have bloated faces and glands, scars on their hands from rubbing their knuckles raw with inducing vomiting, cracked lips, rotten teeth and bad breath as well as bad skin condition.Bulimia Nervosa can be very harmful to a person's body. The cycle of bingeing and purging can take its toll on the digestive system and can drastically alter how it functions, even to the point of the system being unable to function properly on its own where the person can no longer keep food down.

Bulimia Nervosa affects between 1 and 2% of all teenage or young women.5% of college-aged females are believed to suffer from bulimia. Approximately 10% of identified bulimic patients are men. The reason for this is mostly psychological because girls at this age are very self conscious about their looks and when they develop this irrational fear that they are too heavy, resulting in a poor social life and low esteem, they are likely to fall pray to this disease because of those fears.
